Water
Water is an integral element of what makes Rockwood so special. Our rolling lawns lead down to two dams. These dams, filled by water from the river, are used to irrigate the farm and are a favourite swimming spot for guests. There are various indigenous and alien species of fish in the dams and river that provide a fun challenge for keen fishermen. The Boontjies River runs through the farm, providing spectacular swimming spots, many set amongst stunning rock formations. It also feeds the ‘voor’, a stream running in front of Cedar House and Rockwood Cottage. The sound of running water adds to the atmosphere of peace that all who visit Rockwood experience. Our private rock pools are filled with crystal clear water flowing from the river. These pools provide the perfect spot for a refreshing dip or to soak away the day. And during winter, when the water is too cold for most, the pools themselves become a place of quiet contemplation and reflection.
Rock
Young and old marvel at the rock formations scattered all over Rockwood Farm. From tiny rock shapes to balancing boulders, they provide natural jungle gyms to some while acting as sculptures for others to admire. These rocks, so quintessential of the Cederberg, also set Rockwood apart, and make up the mountainous terrain. There are 11kms of trails for hikers and trail runners to further explore. And a spirit of exploration is encouraged, because hidden in between rocky crevices and beneath overhangs is remarkable rock art – paintings telling stories and imparting ancient truths of the San people who passed through here long ago.
Views
Whether you are relaxing on your verandah, or our bench by the river, whether you have hiked to the top of a rocky outcrop or are walking through the flower fields on our farm, you will be spoilt with breathtaking views. The landscape changes throughout the day as the light changes and highlights things previously hidden. Valley and mountain views, sunsets and sunrises for those earlybirds, night skies filled with too many stars to count. Rockwood is a place where memories are made.
Flowers
The previous owners of Rockwood planted and nurtured the indigenous gardens that can still be enjoyed today. Manicured lawns and beds of indigenous flowers paint a picture for botanists and floral enthusiasts. Rockwood is also a working flower farm, so guests can appreciate first hand the process of flower farming – from planting, to production and processing. It is such a joy to be able to walk through fields of flowers. And then also to appreciate the feast of natural fynbos surrounding these farmed fields. Intricate, colourful specimens that pop up between rocks and can be examined along mountain trails.
Wilderness
Situated in the Sneeuberg conservancy, Rockwood Farm has nearly 100 hectares of pristine mountain wilderness to explore. The goal of the conservancy is to manage farming activities in a way which ensures the preservation of the natural flora and fauna as a natural heritage for future generations. There is a large variety of wild animals on the farm, ranging from the common rock dassie to the elusive Cape Leopard. Bird life is prolific at Rockwood, and you will often see our troop of baboons cross the lawn in the early evening to find sleeping spots in the rocks. Checklists of birds and fauna are available in each of our cottages. Whether you are hiking or swimming or sitting comfortably on the verandah, you will feel immersed in nature.
